Your Remortgage Journey Step by Step

One of the biggest concerns homeowners have is not knowing what happens once they decide to remortgage. The good news is that, with the right advice, the process is usually much simpler than people expect.

Here’s what your remortgage journey will typically look like:

Step 1 – Your Initial Appointment

Your adviser will take the time to understand your current mortgage, your financial circumstances and what you’re hoping to achieve.

This could include:

  • Reducing your monthly payments
  • Securing a new fixed-rate deal
  • Borrowing additional funds
  • Reviewing your mortgage term
  • Planning for future financial goals

We’ll also explain your options and recommend the mortgage that best suits your needs.

Step 2 – Securing Your Mortgage

Once you’re happy to proceed, we’ll submit your application and secure your chosen mortgage.

Many lenders allow you to secure a new mortgage several months before your current deal ends, giving you peace of mind while protecting you from potential interest rate increases.

Step 3 – Providing Your Documents

Depending on your circumstances, your lender may ask for documents such as:

  • Recent payslips
  • Bank statements
  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of address

If anything is required, we’ll let you know exactly what you need and guide you through every step.

What Happens Next?

Once your application has been submitted, there are just a few more steps before your new mortgage starts.

Mortgage Valuation

Your lender may carry out a valuation of your property to confirm its current value. In many cases, this is completed remotely without anyone needing to visit your home.

Legal Work

If you’re moving your mortgage to a new lender, a solicitor or conveyancer will usually handle the legal work. Many lenders provide this service free of charge as part of the remortgage process. If you’re completing a Product Transfer with your existing lender, legal work is often not required.

Mortgage Offer

Once your lender is happy with your application, they’ll issue your formal Mortgage Offer. We’ll review everything with you and answer any final questions before completion.

Completion Day

On the agreed completion date, your new mortgage replaces your existing one. If you’re changing lenders, your solicitor will arrange for your old mortgage to be repaid and your new mortgage to begin.

From this point onwards, you’ll simply make your monthly payments under your new mortgage deal.Throughout the entire process, your adviser will keep you updated so you’re never left wondering what happens next.

One of the reasons our customers tell us the process feels so straightforward is because we do as much of the work as possible before submitting your application.

Common Mistake

Waiting until your current mortgage has almost ended before starting the application.

Many homeowners underestimate how long a remortgage can take. While many applications complete quickly, delays can happen if additional documents are needed or your lender experiences high demand.
